KILLZONE 2 SCORE OF 9.4 FROM IGN IN QUESTION

kz2

The gaming guru’s at IGN have fianlly posted their review of KILLZONE 2 and if you have not read it head on over, it’s a great review. However, some red flags have been raised in regards to the score in the graphics department.

Every since the infamous 2005 E3 CG video, KILLZONE 2 has been the most talked about first person shooter by the media due to the CG videos unbelievable graphical impression. Truth be told, how could you not be overly curious on whether or not Sony could actually deliver on such a burden of a task. The E3 video displayed some of the most awe-inspiring graphics ever seen for a video game and even the most faithful Sony enthusiasts questioned whether the PS3 could actually deliver on this vision

clip_image0011

Well four years later the verdict is finally in and Sony/Guerrilla Games has by all accounts delivered on their promise. Based on the IGN review KILLZONE 2 delivers;

“Everything from the first entrance onto the battlefield to the last cutscene creates a hectic, fun and fast-paced thrill ride through a warzone where each step you take could be your last.” – IGN 9.4

Yet it does appear that some people are not fully satisfied with the overall review. After reading some of the user comments it is clear that the IGN score on KILLZONE 2’s graphics are definitely in question. There are some great titles that have come before KILLZONE 2 that have boasted some rather amazing graphics and IGN has handsomely rewarded these games with high marks. For example,  Gears of War 2 was an amazing game that received a 9.5 in the  graphics category.  It is clear that Gears of War 2 does deserve it score 0f 9.5 graphically but one has to question comments made in IGN review such as;

“Phenomenal visuals prove that Guerrilla either met or surpassed that infamous E3 trailer. Some technical issues hold it back from being a completely flawless masterpiece.”  – IGN

The 2005 E3 trailer was considered impossible to meet by many, IGN included and rightfully so, but  to suggest that KILLZONE 2 met or supassed the 2005 E3 trailer is absolutely amazing, an accomplaishment in itself, yet the 9.5 score it received just doesn’t add up. Also, surprisingly, despite how well received KILLZONE 2 has been by the media and IGN, it did not receive a 10 in any of IGN’s distinct categories, however Halo 3 did receive 10’s in three of the disticnt categories, interesting?

assaulttrooper

Does all this really matter? No! It will not hurt the sales of KILLZONE 2. Not in the least.  KILLZONE 2, despite the questions at hand will be well received by the Playstation Nation for months to come. Unfortunately fairness and integrity is in question and as gamers we deserve the absolute truth despite outside influences that might be a factor.

Regardless, February 27th really cannot get here fast enough. Keep Gaming!!

Okay Shadow Wolf and friends, let me start by saying this: My early statements i made about KillZone 2, based on screenshots and video clips, were pretty much spot on compared to the reviews of KillZone 2 i just read on IGN. I have always told you i know my stuff and that i am a true gamer. Anyway, i have provided some key comments from the review i read. In parenthesis are my comments, check it out:

… Killzone 2 has achieved its ambitious visual fidelity and immersive, yet cinematic presentation. But is it a shooter worth your time? That’s the US$599 question that a lot of early adopters are probably clawing to get answered.*** (That question is worth repeating-is the game really worth $600 Shadow Wolf?)***

…However, it’s a bit of a ‘conditional-yes’ because Killzone 2 stood on the shoulders of giants to get there, taking several transparent cues to market leaders and genre stand-outs to form its gameplay, story, characters, twists and critically, its attitude. *** (In other words, it uses elements of Gears, COD, and Halo.)***

Killzone 2 is one of the finest, most visually unified games ever made. Period. It’s a rush to just sit back and watch, almost to the point of distraction. It uses colour and lighting to evocative effect, while impressing on a technical level as much as an artistic one. The framerate is locked at 30 frames per second (no 60 frames per second?) and we never encountered any slowdown. Incredible. While many games can claim to emulate a dystopian far-future in the traditions of something like Gears of War, Killzone 2 really tries hard to nail its own unique visual stamp and it succeeds.
*** (SHADOW WOLF DID I NOT TELL YOU THIS LAST YEAR? I told you that the art director is going for a more artistic feel using a painterly style along with lighting!!! I told you this and even pointed it out to you visually. Whether you admit this or not i feel good about myself because i am an artist and i know what i am talking about when it comes to graphics and this review just validated my earlier thoughts. I’m not saying the graphics are not great but in comparison to GOW2 it is not technically as advanced and certainly not the best graphics ever seen as you like to believe)***

The raw shooting mechanics also tend towards realism. The feel of the game actually approaches a title like Call of Duty 4, more than Insomniac’s Resistance 2 ***(It’s suppose to be in the future and you are fighting aliens yet it feels like COD??!!)***

The setting, while stunning to behold, isn’t as foreign as a game like Halo 3, where you’re dealing with alien races and technology. Vehicles, buildings and equipment, while vaguely futuristic, still cater to strictly human races and there’s a subsequent familiarity to most of the locations that you’ll encounter.

***(Shadow Wolf, did i not tell you, in earlier conversations, that one of my major concerns of KillZone 2 was the lack of creativity in the enemy and the environments? Did i not mention that everything looks like it’s on earth rather then being on another planet? Again my points are validated in this review)***

…It comes out of left field, but its presence adds some much needed variety to proceedings-***( In other words, up until this point the environments and enemies lack variety)***

Missions aren’t particularly complex, which is disappointing.-***( WOW! That’s sad.)***

Outside of creating your own custom game styles, the real beauty of Killzone 2’s multiplayer rests with its single-minded dedication to making you work as a team. ***( Maybe the multiplayer is where it’s at)***

PlayStation fanboys out there: please brace yourself, because this is going to hurt a little bit. Killzone 2 never comes as close to being as innovative as it is striking to look at. There are some incredible water cooler moments in there – don’t get us wrong – but the final level of the game deflates the experience somewhat and really underlines how little the game pushes the boundaries of shooters.
***( Amazing!! Thats how i felt about KillZone 2 based on every clip i have seen and every clip you have sent me Shadow Wolf. KillZone 2 looks great but honestly is there anything in the clips and pics leading up to the games release that makes it unique??? Have you seen anything that makes it stand alone compared to other first person shooters? You may cry out that the graphics are the best ever but that so relative. KillZone2 has not introduced anything we have not seen in other video games based on what we’ve seen so far and it looks as if this reviewer experienced this concern first hand. Not good)***

We can’t spoil this for you [you’d publicly disembowel me, and I’d deserve it –Patch] but the end foe is cheap, nasty and boring.-

***( NOW that really sucks!!! The ending is one of the biggest determining factors that decide if a game was good or great!!! For you true gamers out there- How many times have you played a game for who knows how many hours only to have a crappy ending? That really really suck!!!)***

…Actually, the silly dialogue and Hollywood-lite posturing leads us to the next point. The characters, their personalities and reactions in given situations, sit dangerously close to the archetypal Gears of War squad members. You have your ‘Cole Train’ – in Killzone 2, he’s Rico, an abrasive African American who clearly learned his interpersonal skills in the mean streets of future-South Central; you have your Marcus Fenix – in his place, you have Sev, the leader of Killzone 2’s Alpha Squad, sporting a shaved of head and a heart full of secret turmoil. Of course, calling out Killzone 2 on formulaic characters is like saying ‘that porn star’s boobs look fake’ – It comes with the territory and it’s all part and parcel of the ‘ooh-rah’ , guts-and-glory, ‘do it for America’ attitude that many of these games share. It’s just that Killzone 2 is the latest of these, and more importantly, it really plays too closely to Gears’ formula – almost like a narrative equation at times. You’ll pick who dies, how people respond accordingly and even the big plot twist well before it happens. If you don’t give two shakes about stories in your shooters, then feel free to disregard this whole point. But for everyone else, this isn’t a particularly compelling story full of characters that you connect with on any deeper level, and that ultimately impacts the cinematic quality of the storytelling.
***(Another downer. The whole goal of a franchise game is to separate yourself from the competitors and be unique, KillZone 2 does not look that way based on this review. Instead Guerilla may have plagiarized other games rather then create something never before seen.)***

When you strip back the incredible graphics and in-your-face production values, there’s very little that pushes Killzone 2 above games like Gears of War 2, Resistance 2, Halo 3 or Crysis in terms of gameplay. The cover system is handy, but frequently, using cover becomes almost a moot point; a big gun and a whole lot of patience become your best friend. Besides, cover systems are hardly unique these days – even in first-person shooters.

***(This reviewer is obviously not paid by Sony and is telling the truth. I love it. Again KillZone 2 is a pretty game to watch but it’s innovation is lacking, as i have voiced to you Shadow Wolf in the past. The reviewer pointed out that another FPS on the PS3, RES 2, had set a higher bar in innovation then KillZone 2.)***

…Is Killzone iconic, then? Well, the enemies certainly are from a design standpoint – except, when you realise that there are only a handful of ground troop types, a token ‘tank’ class and a few airborne enemies that could’ve been pulled from any of the shooters mentioned above. The weapons aren’t remarkable, outside of the Electro-gun, which is one of the sole sci-fi-esque weapons in the game. You’re really only looking at your usual line-up of SMGs, rifles, shotguns, explosives and distance weapons – so nothing really sets Killzone apart here too. Well, is it epic in length? At nine and half hours on our first play through on standard difficulty and moderately thorough exploration, we’d have to go with no.

***( DAMN! There is lack of creativity in it’s enemy units and environments, the game is short, the weapons lack variety, and the ending is cheap. Is this the ingredients to a system seller?)***

    Closing Comments:
End line, Killzone 2 is, by IGN’s definition, outstanding. It is consistent in every respect and is testament to the talents of the developer as well as the power of the PS3 in the hands of a team that knows how to use the hardware – and who have the full support of Sony behind them. In the same stroke, it is not the be all and end all of console shooters, or even shooters on the PS3 – but if you’ve read this far and you’re one of the Killzone devout, you probably won’t care anyway. You can rest easy knowing it was ultimately worth the wait.

***( In other words, If you are a true gamer and NOT a Sony fanboy KillZone 2 does not live up to it’s hype. KillZone2 is a beautiful game that does not introduce anything that a gamer has not seen before, unlike games such as Halo, Gears of War, and Resistance 2. But if you are a Sony Fanboy then you are going to love it no matter what. I guess you will love it Shadow Wolf. LOL!!!)***

Shadow Wolf, i don’t know how many times i have told you that a game is worth nothing until you have it in your hands and can play it. I tried to give you a heads up on Killzone 2 based on my experience as an artist and gamer. I had major concerns with the enemy looking like Germans and the environments looking too earth like. It looks like others are realizing the same. I still will not pass a final judgement on a game i have not played and i still feel KillZone 2 will be a great game but not the BEST EVER as you like to make anything that’s on the PS3.

    Later,

nice, cant wait for other reviews

  • Eman3d I appreciate how passionate you are about defending IGN’s overall review of KILLZONE 2. Clearly you are wholeheartedly in agreement with IGN’s review because it echoes your previous comments made about the game. I definitely applaud you for that. However I must add that a 9.4 rating is a great score and while IGNs score of 9.5 for KILLZONE 2’s graphics is not a bad thing, in fact it’s great, it does not match their comments made of the accomplishments by Sony/Guerrilla Games matching and or surpassing the E3 2005 target render. And while you may agree with IGN, which is not a bad thing by no stretch of the imagination, there are a number of reviews that I don’t think you would agree with in regards to KILLZONE 2 which states that KILLZONE 2 is the best fps to date. The majority of the the reviews currently available today on KILLZONE 2 have also stated that graphically it has no match and the gameplay is second to none. Eman3d not to burst your bubble but agreeing with IGN does not exactly make you a gaming guru. Be sure to check out metacritics overall review avg of KILLZONE 2. It might surprise you! Eman3d thanks for commenting, I welcome awesome and passionate gaming comments like yours, keep’em coming and keep gaming.

I’m very excited about killzone 2. Its the best exculsive game I have ever seen. Its killing xbox’s gaylo(halo). Once xbox starts making some visine for all those red rings then maybe they can compete.

  • Ron it appears you have had some run ins with the RROD issue. Have you ever owned a 360?

  • Eman3d great avatar. Keeping it old school, no doubt – NICE!!

  • eman3d

Before i leave another comment let me share with you a little about myself.
First off, i am a gamer not a fan of one system, i go where the games are, period! I have been a fan of video games for over 30 years and i have been apart of the video game industry for over 7 years. I am also a former 3d animator/ cgi artist and i have hopes of designing my own video game in the near future. My passion for video games is not centered on pure enthusiasm for one particular system but more on the continued betterment of video games which is basically boils down to the following criteria- Gameplay, graphics, innovation, content, and gameplay. If a game can hit on all of these factors it has a great chance for success.

KillZone 2 is a major game that is proceeded with a boatload of hype. Sony has a lot of hope in this game and so does their fans for obvious reasons- Sony desperately needs a game that has a footprint the size of Halo. Will KillZone2 accomplish such a task, we will know in the next few weeks when gamers get their hands on the game until then i will focus on the reviews that have appeared within the last few days, in particular, the review on IGN. If you read my previous post you will see that the reviewer had some pretty in depth comments about KillZone2. If you are a Sony fanboy you may find them ‘negative’. If you are a gamer you will find them very informative. Personally, i have had some serious issues with some aspects of KillZone2 based on pictures and video clips. My concerns were ultimately validated by the reviewer on IGN. I know it’s kind of scary when someone rains on your parade before the parade is even started ( though some have started their own KillZone2 parade saying the game is the best FPS ever even though they have never played one minute of the game!) I would love to discuss these concerns with members of this blog and see how others feel about KillZone2.

  • eman3d

Yo Ron, you mentioned the word ‘compete’. have you been living in a cave? Sony is having all kinds of problems doing just that- competing. Yeah the RROD is one heckuva blunder on Microsoft’s part yet Microsoft is still in second place! The numbers do not lie, look at the NPD sales charts and they tell you how everything stacks up in the industry as far as sales are concerned, which is, by the way, what it’s all about- sales.

I find it funny no one ever mentions Nintendo and how they have smeared Microsoft and Sony with the sales of the Wii.

  • eman3d

You know me, i was there in the beginning!

  • eman3d

Hey Shadowolf you need to show a little reserve with your patronage towards KillZone2. I think you are putting a little too much mustard on that hotdog.

  • Well like yourself, I tend to call it like I see it. Since the days of the PS2 and Xbox there have been a plethora of first person shooters that have taken this genre to the new heights. Based on what is being displayed by Guerrilla Games with KILLZONE 2, it appears this genre is again being taken another step further.

  • eman3d

But you haven’t even played the game yet, you are passing judgement on clips and pictures. What’s funny is how you totally ignore the comments of the reviewer even though his comments are valid points based off of playing the game! Furthermore, what has you convinced that KillZone2 has taken FPS to another level??? Please, honestly, can you say anything about KillZone2 that you have not seen already in other shooters???? Please tell me actual facts instead of hype and enthusiasm that sets KillZone2 apart from other FPS. Please give me several examples that you have noticed. There has to be something because you labeled this the best FPS ever that you have not played. 🙂

  • eman3d

Hey Shadowolf, after you explain to me what makes KillZone2 the best FPS ever (i know the movie is right around the corner) tell me what FPS’s do you speak of that were on the PS2??? As i remember, that system was not known for FPS. Explain yo’self son.

  • eman3d

How is it, in this era of next gen gaming, KillZone 2 does not have co-op play??? This is a true shame. For those of us who have played all the Halo games dating back to the original Xbox, to those of us who played Gears 2 with your best friend, COD4, Res 2, etc. You all know there is nothing like finishing a great game together online, What was Guerrilla thinking? Is this taking FPS to the next level?

  • In my last comment I stated; “it appears this genre is being taken another step forward” and yes you are absolutely right, I have yet to experience KILLZONE 2 first hand to it’s conclusion, however I have experienced titles like the original KILLZONE, Battlefield: Bad Company, Halo 1,2 and 3, COD4, Resistance 1-2, Gears of War 1-2, COD:WAW, Crysis Warhead and many other shooters and for starters KILLZONE 2 from what I’ve experienced from the online beta and from what I’ve seen in the single-player campaign, there is not and I repeat, there not a shooter on the market made on a home console that graphically rivals it. Nothing! So from a graphical standpoint KILLZONE 2 has set the bar for shooters, no doubt! Now in terms of gameplay I have to wait and see, based on my experience with the online beta not even COD4 was as exhilarating. Until my time with the KILLZONE 2 beta COD4 and Crysis were tops in my book. No other shooter I played felt as real, and I’m talking about the beta. Also, you have to remember that today a shooter can only do so much, with that said, developers have to find creative ways to be innovative. For example, what did we see in Halo 3 that was any different from any other shooter before it? Yes I understand that it was released 2 years ago so no, I am not comparing it to today’s standards. What I am asking is your same question of a title that in my opinion was a solid shooter. The addition of VR lighting was a wonderful addition in Halo 3, the fact that the game allowed for in-game recording/replay was great addition, some of the new vehicles added were also a nice touch. There were no noticeable destructible environments but that’s ok it still was a great game. Because a game may not be introducing something groundbreakingly new does not mean it is not a great game, Halo 3 proved that. Now, KILLZONE 2 on the other hand is introducing a groundbreaking achievement from a technical standpoint. It is introducing weather effects that have yet to experienced in any other shooter, dynamic lighting that gives it it’s own artistic flare. Full 7.1 surround sound that has yet to implemented in any of the titles mentioned other than Bad Company I believe. There really is a lot there that will be finally realized come Feb 27th.

  • I must add that judgement for KILLZONE 2 as the best shoooter ever has not been passed yet.

  • Eman3d in responds to your comment on KILLZONE 2’s lack of co-op, it is interesting that of all the games you mentioned as great co-op experiences only COD4 has won GOTY and did not feature a co-op mode. As a gaming guru you should know that.

  • eman3d

I meant Call of Duty: World at War, i was just playing with a friend of mine the other night.

  • eman3d

To say Halo 3 was a great game is a very biased opinion and you know it. I mean 4 player co op is unheard of, and yes that was 2 years ago! What happened Guerrilla???. You can try to civilize Halo all you want but it’s still the top selling FPS. Anyway, what you fail to acknowledge is the comments that are filling the internet about KillZone 2. I’ll list a couple. 1. The ending is CHEAP. 2. The enemies and environments are not varied. 2. The game as a whole is not groundbreaking. 3. The game is not long. 4. Scripted death animations. 5. No co op mode. etc. I saw the meta review and out of 4 reviews 2 gave it 90 out of a 100 which means it’s not wowing everyone out there.
All i am saying is do not count your eggs before they hatch. Until proven otherwise, Gears of War 2 has the best game-play, the best scenarios, the best graphics. Halo has the best story, the best presentation, the best A.I. and the best hero, Call of Duty: World at War the best immersion of any FPS. I can’t say if KillZone 2 will rival the success of Halo or Gears based on the entire game as a whole but it will satisfy PS3 owners out of necessity. When the game launches i will play it in it’s entirety and give it my personal unbiased review based on direct comparisons to Gears 2 and Halo 3 as well as COD5: World at War.

  • eman3d

I still don’t understand the omission of co op!!!??? This game has tempted me to get a PS3 but without co op…. Would you rather share exciting moments with your homie online? Rather then in a room by yourself, thats so old now.

  • eman3d

First I wanna say that there is no such thing as a pefect system, now I got the PSA out the way let’s get down to business. Now don’t get me wrong eman3d xbox has good games and is a great system (when it actually worked). I had an xbox 360 for the past 3 years and never in my life have I had a system die on me not once but twice and thats not the craziest part. How is it that 4 of my friends had their xbox’s just die on them?!?! please explain that.In the words of Mike Tyson thats “ludicrous”. Like I told shadowlf before those commercials with MAC and PC are sooo non fictional. Now we a Of course the xbox’s are selling more because u can get them dirt cheap now. The reason being is because microsoft knows they made a falty system with some cheap a** parts, so they aren’t losing any money by selling them for $199. All micrsoft cares about is maximizing their profits by compromising the quality.

Another thing is how is I paid $7.99 a month for xbox live (about $96.00 a year) and the server was always down. I swear to you I can’t remember the last time I played a full game of madden without lagging or the game disconnecting. Also, whats up with that whack avatar?!?! All he does is stand there and do nothing. So this is what I get for $7.99?!?!? So right now my xbox is sitting there on the stand collecting dust and I believe my dog probably used it for a bathroom, which is actually a suprise because she usually sh*ts on something with better quality.

I love having a game system that doesn’t sound like a lawn mower when you turn it on. I love having a game system that you don’t need to keep buying batteries just to use the controller. I love having a game system that offers online for FREE, let me repeat my self FREE!!!!!!!! I love having a game system that your avatar can actually have his own apt overlooking the ocean, you can meet other people in the network, you can go to the movies, etc….

I’m so tired of paying all this money for xbox and I keep getting F*cked like a teenage filipino hooker.

P.S. NO GAME ON ANY SYSTEM CAN TOUCH METAL GEAR SOLID 4 PERIOD!

  • Good Stuff! Eman3d I like how you stated;

“I can’t say if KillZone 2 will rival the success of Halo or Gears based on the entire game as a whole but it will satisfy PS3 owners out of necessity.”

As one who pride themselves with gaming experience and knowledge you should be more careful how you state certain points. Stating that PS3 users will be satisfied with KILLZONE 2 out of necessity brings you closer to being labeled as a 360fanboy and I would hope that isn’t the case. I must add that gaming experiences across the board today are closely matched with maybe stronger opinions leaning either left(360) or right(PS3) depending on the individual. For the record I never belittled HALO 3. I only used HALO 3 as an example of truth. The truth of the matter remains the same which is, KILLZONE 2 is currently receiving rave reviews from all the major game review publications. KILLZONE 2 currently maintains an average rating of 95/100 based on metacritic. KILLZONE 2 is currently the #2 most pre-ordered game on Amazon. KILLZONE 2 is currently the #1 most pre-ordered game at GAMESTOP. Am I saying KILLZONE 2 will definitely be better than any other shooter before it, no. But I am saying that based on certain reviews and my own experience with the beta, all the other games you and I have mentioned might probably be taking a back seat to KILLZONE 2. To answer your question on why Guerrilla Games opted out of adding co-op to KILLZONE 2, Guerrilla made this decision primarily because they wanted an equally balanced graphical experience between the single player mode and online modes. Adding co-op at the same technical level was not feasible. However, there have been rumors that later added DLC could be a possibility.

  • RON

I KNOW MY PREVIOUS RESPONSE WAS OFF THE SUBJECT BUT I JUST FELT LIKE VENTING.

  • WOW! Ron that is a seriously unfortunate experience. I’m sorry. As gamers we spend our hard earned money for the ultimate gaming experience which both the PS3 and 360 can offer but unfortunately sometimes there are repeated snags that kill our gaming experience more times than it should. Btw, I do agree that MGS4 was the ultimate gaming experience in 2008. Oh and you can vent whenever you like, Keep Gaming!

  • eman3d

First off Mr. Ron, i am a grown man and i refuse to go on a cursing tirade like a 15 year old over some video games, get real.

Nonetheless, i am sorry about your experiences with your broken 360’s, it’s something we all had to endure but the funny thing is we did! Can you name anytime in consumer history that people bought a device knowing it was faulty and would in all likelihood have to send it in for repairs? That’s the bigger story and the more reason to applaud the success of the 360. If it was anything but spectacular it would have crash landed a long time ago. As a PS3 fan i can see why you are so upset and so defensive, a lot has changed in the video game landscape, Sony is no longer the champ, Sony is now merely a player. Now you can scream out to the top of your lungs about all the things you hate about Microsoft, Xbox live, the controllers, etc. but it still does not change the fact that Sony is faltering. Did you not read the latest Sony loses this year? You complain about Xbox Live lagging yet millions of Xbox Live subscribers play everyday and are happy with the service. You say PSN is free, but we all know the old saying- you get what you pay for. You rag on the Xbox Controllers but everyone knows the 360 is the home of FPS. What you fail to realize about me Ron is that i work in the industry, i work on games for the 360, PS3, and PC. All of my video game life i have owned ALL SYSTEMS up until now, which will change very soon. I know the PS3 shortcomings, and their are a lot (how many updates have you had since the system was released?) Why did Sony create trophies? Why do you have to load a game unto the hard drive before you play it? I could go on but it’s a moot point on a Sony fanboy website, that’s not my goal here. I understand what it is to be a fan of a system, i was like that with Atari, way back in the day but as i became more involved with video games i realized my site was becoming narrow and i was robbing myself of some awesome experiences with other systems. You made a claim that the reason the Xbox is selling is because you can get one for dirt cheap. Mmmmmm i guess the same could be said for Nintendo! LOL. You seem to think Sony price on the PS3 is ok? I understand, you must be a baller. Anyway, please get your facts straight before you start ranting. If you check the charts games that are available for the 360 and PS3, sale more on the Xbox 360. The attach rate of the 360 kills the PS3 and this was before the price drop! Now are you saying that out of the millions of gamers world wide they got it wrong on which system they prefer and you got it right??!! Also, do you really think i beleive you when you say the Xbox servers were always down and lagged when you had Xbox Live??!! Thats the funniest junk i ever heard. You know PSN is crap compared to Xbox, i won’t even go there. Lastly Ron, i work for Sony so don’t label me a hater, the success of the PS3 helps me stay employed. ‘Nuff said.

  • eman3d

To Shadowolf. If anybody is a FANBOY it’s you, and you know it. Just reading everything on your blog validates that fact but that’s okay as long as YOU know it.

As far as KillZone 2 goes, lets see once you play it how it stacks up. The reason i said out of necessity is because the PS3 does not have a game in it’s library that makes people want to buy its system. Is that a lie? Is that being a 360 fanboy? NO! it’s simply the truth. The Halo franchise is phenomenal to say the least and it’s sales figures are only matched by GTA. Is that being a fanboy? No! It’s simply the truth. You see, i deal with truths, unlike you. The PS3 is hoping KillZone 2 will become like Halo and Gears of War and so do you as a PS3 fanboy. You so dearly want to have something that creates a culture, a cult following amongst fans in this new generation of gaming. So far, that has not happened for the PS3. If it has please let me know which game has done that. I honestly would like to purchase a PS3 just so i can experience other games, that’s the nature of a true gamer, but right now there is no game that warrants the price of the PS3. Is that being a 360 fanboy? Is paying close to $560 for a system that does not outshine its competitors worth it? No! Until Sony drops a bomb on the level of a Halo or a Gears thats when i will consider buying a PS3 and there are millions of other gamers who feel the same way. There are millions of other gamers who choose to buy Nintendo or the 360. Is that a lie? KillZone 2 looks cool but, it does have flaws that i feel will hold it back from reaching the Halo level. In the end, i still feel PS3 fans will love it out of neccessity- They want to have a game on the level of Halo in the next generation and it will not happen with KillZone 2. The game that CAN reach Halo statis is GOD of WAR!!! hands down! You see, God of War is unique it stands untouched by anything else. It is a whole unto itself without any competitors- rightfully so. KillZone2 had already been said to have stolen characteristics of Gears and Halo,9 i hope you can agree to that) and that will be it’s downfall. Killzone 2 is not bringing anything new to the table that has not already been done. Shodwolf (i feel funny calling you that) if you honestly played Gears of War 2 you know that game was on a whole different level when it comes to creature design, enemy bosses, environment, it was like playing a Hollywood blockbuster. There were things in Gears2 that no one has ever seen in video games. Now look at KillZone 2. What have you seen that you have never seen before in FPS let alone video games??? The game looks and feels like Call of Duty and other reviewers have said the same thing.
If you really don’t understand where i am coming from i don’t know what else to say. Only time will tell. i am not here to play system wars, that’s a waste of time. I just feel some people cheer too much rather then honestly assessing the games that are available regardless of what systems.

  • Eman3d what position do you hold @ Sony?

  • eman3d

I am a Senior Production Assistant. I work directly with the CGI artist as Sony Imageworks.

  • That’s great! Do you work on the gaming side or the movie side @ Sony?

  • Excuse my last question, I believe you work on the movie side based on http://www.imageworks.com/. Eman3d I am definitely impressed. Keep up the good work!

  • eman3d

I don’t believe what you are trying to do Deri.. i mean ‘Shadowolf’ are you trying to question my experience in the videogame industry???!!!! You are asking me questions that you already know the answers to, that’s cool dog, i see what you are trying to do. For others on this site, my experience in the video game industry comes from working for Activision and Vivendi Games now Activision Blizzard. If you need me to post my resume i will. At Sony i will be working on movies. Your line of questioning seems to be going somewhere Shadowolf, i assure you my experiences in the movie and video game industry go hand in hand. I’m interested in what you are trying to find out, please continue.

  • eman3d

Just to put things in perspective as to why movies and video games are symbiotic in nature.. The technology used to create movies that feature CGI effects give birth to the hardware that is used for video games. What we see now in video games has a lot to do with the advancements in Hollywood. Remember the progression from sprites (Nintendo) to polygons (PS2) to shaders (Xbox) were all attributes used to create CGI in Hollywood. As a result of this advancements Western game studios are now leading the way in video game creation, it’s no longer dominated by Japan. I remember as an animator i was listening to a symposium of big time Hollywood producers and cgi artist and they all said they will not enter the video game industry until the technology for video games is able to produce the effects they needed to tell their stories. Well, shortly afterwards, Nvidia created a graphics card that had the ability to produce real time shaders!! It was an incredible breakthrough and that very technology was put inside the first Xbox. Thats why Halo was such a big success because it was created with a western influence by a company in America (Bungie) who made a game that was more like an American blockbuster movie as well as using new cgi technology. Personally, i have always echoed these thoughts to my colleges: When Hollywood start making video games it will be all over for Japan and it’s happening right now. All of the major titles are FPS based on sci fi Hollywood type action movies. I was privileged to watch this all take place.

  • OMG!! Eman3d you have totally misunderstood me. By no way, shape or form was I trying to take a jab at your profession. Based on your experience it is clear that you have knowledge of the gaming industry. My asking about which side of Sony did you operate under was a clear cut honest question. However, prior to your answering of my question I looked up imageworks. I personally had no idea who or what imageworks was. From my findings you have an incredible gig!! Are you serious? In light of our HORRIBLE economy today, you are extremely blessed to have such an opportunity. Again, whatever you thought I was trying to do please free yourself. Oh and by the way it is clear that their is a great marriage among games and movies. Both mediums are benefiting from one another and as gamers this makes our gaming experiences that much better.

  • dave

Having experience with the KILLZONE 2 beta the score given to the graphics by ign is absolute horse shit. definitly outside influances going on there. The beta graphics alone rapes gears of war 2, halo 3, cod4 ect..ect, and comes awfully close to lookin as good as the graphics monster that is crysis. And it was just a BETA at a compressed 459mb,

  • What’s up Dave? Nice have an additional gamer in the discussion. Dave btw head over to gravatar.com and register for free. There you will be able to add your choice of avatar which will automatically show up in the comments section. Again, thanks for joining.

I really can’t wait to see this game in person. I am no a PS3 owner but i can feel the excitement coursing through you guys veins but there seems to be some other emotions envolved here as well. How can i explain this…. Ahh yes! You guys sound like a professional basketball player that has a chip on his shoulder because he (in this case the PS3) gets no respect in the league. LOL!
    We will soon see.

I just know how a game can sometimes be over-hyped and that most reviewers are in the back-pockets of major gaming companies which includes Microsoft and Sony. It’s called marketing people and you have to be careful not to get caught up in it’s hype. I have read most of the reveiws and they seem to say the same thing- Great looking game but not that innovative. It also seems that’s all most PS3 owners care about- The graphics are the best!!!!!. That’s why i said you guys have a chip on yours shoulder and it’s true. The 360 has been holding the flag for best graphics over the past couple of years, rightfully so. Games like Gears 1 and 2, Halo trilogy, Bioshock, COD4, etc. have shown the power of the Xbox while the PS3 is left defending itself without an actual game to backup it’s cell chip technology. Killzone 2 is the game that will pump pride into the PS3 owners, hopefully.
I do hope it’s outstanding, really, but know that i have seen some things that concern me and i believe you guys have seen them too but choose not to mention them.

    1. The enemies are not creative, they look like humans, specifically Germans. That’s not good when the enemy is from another planet. I mean look at the enemies in Halo and Gears, compared to those in KillZone 2- there’s no comparison.

    2. So far, all of the environments look like locations on earth! Why? I don’t understand what the director of the game was trying to convey by doing this. Why humanize the game so much? The abandoned factories look like places on earth, not another planet!!!

    3. The weapons are not futuristic enough considering this game features space travel and spaceships. That’s a major continuity problem.

    4. According to several reviews, the game does not feature any WOW moments throughout the game other then the graphics! (which seems to be the only thing PS3 owners care about these days) This is a very scary comment. Anyone who has played Gears 2 know about WOW moments, that game took WOW moments to a whole new level and that’s what truly makes a game special. These are the things you remember about a game long after you beat it.

    5. The ending is a dud. What!!! If this does not bother you then i don’t know what kind of gamer you are. A dudy ending is like having sex and….. i won’t go there, you get the picture!

    6. No Co op. You can downplay this or make up excuses- To maintain the graphics they chose not to include co op- BULL! This is next gen gaming on the most powerful video game machine in the world!!!! At least that’s i’ve been told by Sony. No co-op is a blatent misque. Microsoft would not have allowed this and Sony should not have allowed this as well. All of the big games have online co-op, it’s an expected feature that gamers demand. To omit this experience from a game that has been in the pipe for so long is inexcusable.

7.The game is only 9 hours long. I hope this is not true. I hope the reviewer got this wrong. Lets hope the game is not a pretty demo reel and really gives the gamer a nice long ride.

    8. The enemy units are not varied. Right now there are reports of only 3 classes of enemies. This is not good.

These are my concerns about KillZone 2. Let’s hope these are simply false alarms and no real fire exist. When the game is released we will all get a chance to play the gameand then post our opinions which, i’m sure, will produce mixed opinions.

  • LOL! I don’t believe anyone needs to defend KILLZONE 2 so I wont begin to. A lot of your concerns have already been addressed by Guerrilla Games ex, Why no co-op?, Why are the Helghast humanlike?, Why does planet Helghan feel like Earth?, etc. All these questions have been addressed by the developer. In fact head on over to KILLZONE.com to get your questions answered. Eman3d there is a whole community just waiting for skeptical individuals like yourself to help educate and answer your question if you truly want your questions answered. However I must add that I am convinced that you will find fault in KILLZONE 2 regardless of it’s success. Based on your previous comments I also believe that if KILLZONE 2 was an Xbox360 exclusive you would be losing your mind over it. No doubt! Eman3d regardless of your inevitable critique of the final product of KILLZONE 2 it all boils down to an opinion and we like other reviewers are entitled to that. Whether you believe Gears of War 2 looks and plays better you are entitled that freedom. If I or someone else believes that KILLZONE 2 is an unbelievable experience offering the total package we should also be given that liberty. Again this all boils down to preference and from my beta experience with KILLZONE 2 I like many others are definitely excited about Feb 27th. Also I must recommend you purchase a PS3 first so you can really engross yourself in KILLZONE 2 once it’s released. You might enjoy it better that way. Not to take a jab at your 360 loyalty but with all the KILLZONE 2 talks it appears there really isn’t anything exciting to mention about your obvious console of choice. I guess hoping for the worst for KILLZONE 2 is gratifying to you. I don’t know, all I do know is you should really consider picking up a PS3 and let’s battle it out in KILLZONE 2’s robust multiplayer mode.

  • eman3d

You get an Xbox 360 and i’ll get a PS3.

  • Really? Well as you know previous to owning the PS3 I owned a 360 at it’s 2005 launch and due to particular reasons I exchanged it for the PS3, however I recently snagged a 360 which was almost dirt cheap due to Circuit City recent misfortune. It came with no HDD but I went out and got one separately. Eman3d be careful what you ask for – LOL!

  • eman3d

Well you know what… i guess i’ll have to get a PS3 from the Sony store at my job.

  • Absolutely! Eman3d go ahead and make that happen. By the way, due so many high quality games during the holidays I am just now getting into Tomb Raider: Underworld and honestly despite the games reviews I am having a blast. It’s not quite on the level of Uncharted: Drakes Fortune but still a blast. Have you tried it?

  • eman3d

No, i remember you was the Tomb Raider man, i use to watch you play it.

  • eman3d

I know you must think that i am a Sony hater but that is the farthest from the truth. I have a great love for Sony, what real gamer wouldn’t! It’s just that Sony did so many things wrong with the PS3 and by doing so they lost a lot of 3rd party developers which, to me, hurt us gamers more then anything else and people do not realize that sad fact. You see, if Sony launched the PS3 in a more strategic manner which included the involvement of their 3rd party developers then Sony would still have the same 3rd party developers from the PS2 getting busy on the PS3. Instead of that happening what we have now is the same games coming out on both the 360 and the PS3 and that is not good!!! It should be 80% exclusives for each system, period. If that was the case games would be way more varied and exciting because it would force each system to put a lot of time and effort in the titles they create. That was the reason i always had every system. You know me Shadowolf, i owned all the systems, why? because they all created great games- they had to!. Sony lost most of it’s feathers to 360 and now it’s only 35% exclusives for each systems and that is not good for us gamers.

  • Eman3d you some very valid points. In the end Sony’s ambitious gamble with bluray and other PS3 features which have allowed for such a price point will be the deciding factor going into the tail end of this console cycle.

  • Yeah Tomb Raider was my thing. Today it seems the developer Naughty Dog has taken the tomb raider fundamentals and ran with. This new Tomb Raider is enjoyable but like with most games the longer you play them the more errors you’ll find and right now the camera angles that are mixed with the controls an issue but it’s cool so far.

  • eman3d

Another review that echoes the same thoughts about KillZone 2- Great game but somewhta generic in terms of creativity. My thoughts exactly… so far.

Joystiq Review: Killzone 2 (single player)
    by Justin McElroy { Feb 2nd 2009 at 12:00PM }

Killzone 2 doesn’t come with a gimmick. It couldn’t be easier on the eyes, but if you’re looking for something outside of aesthetics that quickly sets it apart from the bevy of other first-person shooters on the market, you’re not going to find it.

In its first few hours, in terms of weapons, enemies and narrative, Killzone 2 designer Guerilla Games seems as if it’s constantly making the most generic choice possible, and honestly, it was enough to put me off at first. Nearly every Helghast is the same perambulating black blob with red eyes and every weapon feels like something you’ve played with before.

But, as I would discover in the following hours, what it lacks in bionic arms and guns that shoot portals, Killzone 2 makes up for with expertly refined shooting action that’s likely to shame most of the genre’s titles you’ll put in your console this year.
    Gallery:Killzone 2

Killzone 2’s premise is technically science fiction — after an attack by the Helghast on a human colony, the good guys take the fight to the enemy’s home planet of Helghan to take out their leader — but it’s really a far more tactical game than the setting would lead you to believe.

You’re not a super space marine, you’re a soldier who’s systematically dismantling an impossibly large military force. To rush into a situation without knowledge of where your enemies are or what your weapons are capable of is a guaranteed return ticket to the most recent checkpoint. The only way to survive is knowing where to take cover and smartly chipping away at the wall of red eyes on the other side.

“What it lacks in bionic arms and guns that shoot portals, Killzone 2 more than makes up for with expertly refined shooting action.”
Once you master the game’s distinct, well-balanced weapons, you feel a real sense that any situation can be conquered if only you can find the right strategy. After I got the hang of the combat and realized I would have to bring brains as well as reflexes to each scenario, I couldn’t wait to see the next way in which the game would test them both. (That said, it would have been nice if some of the spicier late-game weapons, like, say, a gun that shoots lightning, could have been introduced just a touch earlier — see that “lack of a gimmick” thing we discussed earlier.)

Luckily, occasionally failing those tests means another chance to ogle Killzone 2’s gorgeous graphics. Instead of dwelling on them (and what a delightful dwell it would be), I’ll simply say that while most graphics dazzle for only a few minutes before you become desensitized to them, Killzone 2’s good looks continually demand to be noticed and appreciated. It’s not always stunning from an artistic standpoint, but its the first time I’ve ever seen a glove fall into the Uncanny Valley.

Between great mechanics and being a visual treat, Killzone 2 should be easy to recommend — and it is, to those who are willing to put the time in to discover all its charms. But a little bit of a hook or a gimmick would have been nice, even if it was something as simple as building a remotely compelling narrative. Half the time I wasn’t even positive of where I was or what I was doing there.

And some of the mid-battle dialog? Yuck. What’s that? An example? OK. Midway through the game, as my teammate wondered what made the train we were assaulting so important to the Helghast, he postulated that, “It’s either going somewhere, or carrying something they need.” Yes, friend. That about encapsulates the full range of train functions.

So, it may lack some panache, but look at the thing! Play the thing! It’s gorgeous! Sure, Killzone 2 may be short on gameplay glitz, but it’s undeniably rewarding and fun. And isn’t that why we play games in the first place?

  • After looking at Metacritic it appears very obvious that KILLZONE 2 is a MUST BUY classic. What’s make it positively interesting is there are 13 reviews rating it between 95 to 100. There are 19 reviews rating it between 90 to 94 and only 2 reviews rating it 80 and 87 which is retarded. It appears that KILLZONE 2 is being penalized for playing extremely similar to COD4 with added features like a cover system and more realistic feel, for example some reviews have stated that reloading is not a quick fix but more of a real reload process. Also, the graphics have been considered a resounding breakthrough in console capabilities. I must also add that KILLZONE 2 is being reviewed in a lot of cases with an extremely critical eye. Just an opinion but I can’t remember a game being this nit-picked, again just an opinion. When I look at KILLZONE 2 among the the other shooters before it the only real difference I find as a knock to it would be the lack of co-op yet COD4 had no co-op but did beat out Halo 3 and every other shooter with co-op as Game of The Year in 2007. Interesting. COD4 was also a very short game, shorter than KILLZONE 2, Halo 3 was also not that long in fact cooperatively myself and a co-worker completed it in one sitting, no lie. I say all this because as these games I mention were praised as groundbreaking hits, KILLZONE 2 with arguably the best graphical presentation on a console to date, a cover system unlike any game in the genre, great all out set piece battles that feel real with 7.1 surround sound support unlike the previous games mentioned, an online AI bot mode where you battle it out against bots as added replay value unlike COD4, full 32 player online support with tons of online features yet there are a few doubters. LOL! After release it really wont matter. With over 1.5 million re-orders KILLZONE 2 will bring in the dough BIGTIME. Btw, Eman3d don’t forget our bet, KILLZONE 2 vs GEARS OF WAR 2 overall sales. I got KILLZONE 2 no doubt!

  • eman3d

You are clearly s King Sony fanboy and i would swear you get a profit for every copy of KillZone 2 that is sold. Why are you always trying to justify every game that comes out for the PS3??? When did you become such a fan of FPS??? Sony has NEVER been a FPS company, that genre originated on the PC then went to the N64 and blossomed on the Xbox. So why NOW are you so interested in FPS??? What FPS on the PS3 got you into FPS??? I mean you do play SOCOM but is’nt SOCOM already out?? Or could it be the Halo effect?
You are seriously funny. No one is concerned about KillZOne 2 but you and the rest of the Sony faithful, that’s it! Honestly. The KillZone brand is WEAK!!! and you know it. You can help market it all you want with your blog and hope that it lives up to all the high scores it is receiving. You can dismiss peoples opinions who feel the game is vanilla and just pretty to look at. This game will not break sales records, all it will do is come out, you will play it for a day because if you beat Halo 3 in a day you’ll beat KillZOne 2 in about 5 hours all by yourself cause we know it has no co op. LOL!!! Do you own KillZone 2 underwear??? Is it tattooed to your butt cheeks? Wow. I’ve been around a longtime ‘D’ and i hope for your sake that KillZone 2 is at least decent. You guys are really trying to hype this game soooo much, that’s why it’s being reviewed ‘with such a critical eye’, as you put it.

P.S. You said you played the beta and i guess a lot of others as well and there has been no buzz about how AWESOME Killzone 2 is. I mean, nobody’s running to the nearest Game Stop to purchase a PS3 just to play KillZone 2. Again, i ask you, give me one example of something you seen in the beta that you have not seen in any other FPS to date??? PLEASE anything!

  • eman3d

You really need to stopit Shadowolf. You and a co worker beat Halo 3 in a day??!!! What do you mean by day??- 24 hours makes a day. Did you start at 12 pm and finish the gam by 5am??? what setting- easy?? You are funny. You hate on the 360 so much and you downplay games that have set records and clearly raised the bar. You try to make Gears 2 non existent and said you played it with a friend. Well if thats true how could you even think that KillZone 2 will compare. Has Killzone 2 even been considered making into a movie?? You do know Gears is being made into one. I just can’t wait until the end of this month.

  • eman3d

Here are some comments of other people who own a PS3. These are goodpoints about the state of Sony and why KillZone 2 is so important to them:

The point is, Sony could really do with its “Wii Fit” or its “Halo.” It needs a game that can get into the charts and stay there. It also needs a game people will play over and over. MGS4 was great, but people rarely talk about it now, while Halo 3 continues to be played. LBP has replay value, but it failed to put the PSN on the map.

Meanwhile, the opposition has had multiple chart toppers which have helped shaped each console’s identity. The PS3 is still rather faceless. It needs games that put it on the map.

MGS4 was not a blockbuster. You can argue that it’s a fucking fantastic game, and a critical darling. I agree on both counts. I love MGS4. But let’s not pretend it was to the PS3 what Halo 3 was to the 360, or Wii Fit was to the Wii.

Fact — the PS3 has fantastic games, but it hasn’t found its identifying blockbuster game yet.

gotta agree with Jim on this blockbuster games thing. mgs4 sold around 4million copies. i think blockbuster needs over 5+million. mgs4 is an amazing game but lets get back to point here, kz2 needs a goddam badass superbowl commercial and people will finally see it who aren’t the gaming enthusiastics like us. halo had a superbowl commercial and it was a cg. kz2 can do one all ingame and still look better than the halo one. this is what sony needs and if they fuck this up they can expect less than stellar sales again for what could be their greatest fps this gen.

The PS3 is faceless because you guys don’t hype its amazing games like you do Halo and Gears. Gears, from what I’ve heard, is a mess online with glitches galore. Yet gaming journos gave it a free pass and gave it 10 ratings. Whereas every PS3 game gets knit-picked to pieces.

Uncharted, Resistance, LBP, and Motorstorm are all amazing gaming series. But since the Playstation crowd has such a diverse gaming preference, unlike the SHOOTER centric 360 crowd……it’s hard for any one PS3 game to chart like a Halo/Gears, especially with a smaller install base in the US.

I fail to see how motorstorm is an amazing game series.

the other 3 i will give you that

I am glad to see Jim warm up to his PS3, and seeing his excitement for a game like KZ2 makes me even more excited about it.

It’s a strong system, but doesn’t have its identity in order..yet. Other than being the super-reliable-do-everything-wonderbrick. It really does need its own Halo/Gears though.

That being said, personally, it’s the most satisfying gaming system I’ve ever owned.

Dimly is the cancer that is killing gaming.

As i said, these are comments by existing PS3 owners and they all echo the same thing: WE WANT A CHART BUSTER LIKE HALO AND GEARS!!! LOL!!! Wow it’s funny how times have changed.

  • Eman3d I have no interest in belittling any game that was a great experience regardless of the games length or platform it is played on. My reference to Halo 3 and COD4’s length was not to discredit them but to show an obvious similarity. Going back and forth comparing who’s stick is bigger is not my aim. You are more than welcome to continue your tireless quest of trying to prove to the world that KILLZONE 2 will not be better than your 360 offerings. Believe me, you have incredible mountain to climb.

I own both 360 and PS3, i have to because i go where the games are, so here is a list of grade a titles (in my book from actual play through,oh and i work as a manager at gamestop and have been there for 2 yrs).

    Xbox 360:

    .Crackdown
    .Dead or Alive 4
    .Dead Rising
.Prey (came out on pc but where just doing console comparisons, and at the time this game was amazing)
    .Forza 2
    .PGR 4
    .Ninja Gaiden 2
.Virtua Fighter 5 ONLINE (the most important feature is exclusive here)
    .Gears of War 1 & 2
    .Halo 3
    .Saints Row 1
    .Fable 2
    .Command and Conquerer series
.Viva Pinata (not my cup of tea but has a well catered crowd)
    .Left 4 Dead

I know there is a few more i forgot on this side but it gets hard tryinng to think of every good game.

    PS3:
    .Resistance 1 & 2
    .Warhawk
.Heavenly Sword (actually made a friend if mine buy a ps3 after he beat it with me)
    .Motorstorm 1 & 2
.Uncharted: Drakes Fortune (graphically this was still better than gears for me, it’s very artistic and has hand drawn environments and as a plus some of the best gameplay)
    .Ratchet & Clank
    .Killzone 2
    .Little Big Planet
    .Metal Gear Solid 4
    .MLB: The Show Series

I know for fact there is some missing here but you know both parties have great exclusives, and people shouldn’t let things like sales figures stand in the way of a great gaming experience.I love both systems but in the long run my 360 has cost me triple that of the ps3 (and i have a 60gb). I have had 7 xbox 360’s since launch, of those i have had 5 RROD which is horrible.

However i love games and variety so i didn’t abandon ship, also i want to say while working at GameStop i have literally seen atleast ten fold of broken 360’s coming back versus ps3 (which is another example of you get what you pay for). Let me also say that microsoft didn’t do as many system updates via internet, as they have had to actually physically update the system as well (HDMI is now on all 360’s). I feel like i’m nickel and dimed on everything with the 360, my ps3 however is fine the only thing i actually had to buy extra was an HDMI cable.

I also want to say sony isn’t that far behind in sales 21 million vs. 28 million= 25% difference in consoles sold. Not that bad considering the Microsoft head start, i have been an avid gears and halo 3 fan for yrs (if you don’t believe me i will gladly challenge you or team up, and i guarantee i will be #1 or #2 in every match online). Once i played that KZ2 demo yesterday, simply out it is amazing and the most gritty feeling FPS to date. I am confident this game will take me from the Halo 3 and R2 addictions, confident enough that i played through that demo over 4 times now.

I am not a fanboy just a fan of good games, and lately exclusive wise i have been feeling more keen to Sony and their line up. Oh and cost wise in the end initially you can buy an arcade for $199, a pro for $299, or an elite for $399. On the other side you can get the 80 GB is $399, and the 160 GB is $499.

The difference is with the PS3 you get the wifi adaptor built in, bluetooth support, upgradeable hard drive, OS change (check linux), rechargeable battery in the controller, and of course the guaranteed support of Blu-Ray as the new media format. Oddly however with sony being into HD they have yet to bundle some set of Hi-def cables with the system (a cost that most us will take with lcd’s and what not becoming so cheap). you do however get a free online experience via Playstation Network, while maybe not as robust in it’s community as Xbox Live it is still a fair offering especially considering the cost.

With the Xbox 360 you do get the best online console offering currently available on the market, also their is a deeper library of games at this moment. The 360 does include HD cables right out of the box (they are component, the elite includes HDMI), Xbox live does cost money but it is $49.99 a yr here in the US for a 12+1 month card = roughly around $3.85 a month, however there is a 1 month card for $7.99, and a month card for $19.99. The console does have a defect issue but most of the recent console’s (any with HDMI) were built in support against the RROD and they all include a 3 yr warranty against that as well as 1 yr for other mishaps. I also want to say my current 360 is one of these and it’s been 1 yr with plenty of gaming and no problems. If you want to go wifi for live the wireless adapter does run $99.99 new, also for a rechargeable battery with a cable, it will usually run around $17.99-19.99.

I think all in all they are both pretty equal in their own right, it just depends on which games you want or get the best of both worlds and enjoy both systems and their great titles.

    So in

  • Juniper

I also want to say both consoles have a good online experience but with the 360 you will probably know more people who have one so you can play online, i encourage people to not be so close minded to both consoles and there offerings (remember sega and snes they both rocked). I also like sony because there games run off independent servers and are smooth as hell 99% of the time, live most of the time is p2p and is usually works just as good, also sony’s titles offer a larger online battles (resistance 2 has 60, and warhawk and killzone 2 each have 32 players), so sometimes they feel more epic in scale.

You make some good points Juniper. I too was a Game Stop manager here in Los Angels, Ca. and i also have experience in the video game industry, i worked for Vivendi and Activision. I am just like you when it comes to games- i go where the games are- because i am a GAMER first! I have owned every system dating back to the Atari 2600, so you know i have been in it for a long time. Me and my friend Shadwolf have a lot of friendly discussions/ debates about the merits or lack thereof between Sony and Microsoft. As you said in your post both systems are good systems but i am particularly upset with Sony. As you know, Sony clearly stumbled out of the blocks with their launch of the PS3. The system was lunched haphazardly at the expense of the consumer, although the same can be said for the Xbox with its RROD so the only thing that made the difference was the games and thats where the Xbox shined. Since the next gen started 3 major IP’s were born on the 360- Bioshock, Mass Effect, and Gears and most of Sony’s 3rd party developers jumped ship and brought games that use to be exclusives to Sony to the 360. When you look at that and add in Xbox Live plus a cheaper sales price the Xbox is giving you more when it comes to gaming which is the primary function of a video game machine. The PS3 is the do it all machine or so it seems, but it did not execute it’s primary function- to play games- for at least a year and a half when the arrival of MGS4 hit the scene but during that span gamers were happy with Bioshock and Mass Effect and others. What i am saying is Sony jilted their loyal supporters with the PS3. They forced Blu Ray down peoples throats and made the cost of next gen video gaming too expensive. I have always said- video games should be accessed to everyone and not hindered by price. Obviously this is not Sony’s mantra and for that reason they are in 3rd place and no longer the frontrunner of the industry.

Sony really needs a game that will become to them what Mickey Mouse is to Disneyland- know what i’m saying? I really believe Sony is too arrogant and likes to look at their logo more then their games. Right now the Xbox 360 has 2 mascots- Master Chief and Marcus Fenix. The Wii has Mario, of course and the PS3 has??? I guess you could say Snake but i don’t know if Snake has the marketing power of a Master Chief or Mario. What Sony needs ( i’ve said this multiple times) is God of War, period! This is the most unique game in Sony’s library! I am so amazed how Sony bypassed on committing resources to the creation of God of War 3 for the PS3 (catch the built in marketing 🙂 ) Instead, Sony has been pretty much playing catch up with their games. Little Big Planet is a change of pace but i would’nt consider that a system seller and it’s somewhat a kiddy game. MGS4 appeased its already installed fanbase but i don’t think it had that much of an influence in the selling of PS3. Res 2 did not blow anything away in sales figures and KillZOne 2 is another response to games that have already flooded the FPS market, namely- Halo, Gears, COD, and even GRAW and Rainbow 6. I’m sure KillZone 2 will be good but is it unique? No. It’s basically Sony’s way of saying we can do FPS too. For a customer like me, who does not own a PS3, the only way for me to invest more money into video gaming and to actually buy a PS3 is to entice me with a unique experience and that, right now, in my opinion is God of War 3. This game is the Halo for the PS3 not KillZone 2! Microsoft owns the FPS genre. it was pretty much made for it based on its controllers. Sony was never known as the ‘gun’ machine. Why do they try so much to penetrate that market is funny to me. They can have a game on the level of Halo that is not like Halo but for some reason they are missing the boat. It’s truly amazing. Customers are very keen to things like this. They know when one game is trying to be like the other, we know this. Thats why it’s important to establish your own identity. When Sony released God of War on the PS2 i was shocked!!! I said to myself- This is the perfect medium to create all kinds of chaos- GREEK MYTHOLOGY!!! No one has tapped into the great characters of Greek Mythology until God of War, it was perfect and it has the elements for a great movie someday but for some crazy reason Sony is sleeping at the wheel on this one. I know it will eventually get here but it’s waayyy overdue.
Again good points Juniper, but i still feel Sony slighted their fanbase with the PS3 and for that they find themselves playing follow the leader instead of being the leader like they were with the PS2.

I really don’t think people are being closed minded about to 2 systems it’s just a matter of money. You mentioned Nintendo and Sega, i owned both of those systems with no problem money wise. But when you say get a PS3 and an Xbox 360 plus the needed peripherals needed for each system and the HD monitor to boot! You tell me how many people in todays economy is able to do this???

It’s no surprise why Nintendo is KILLING everyone.

  • Juniper very impressive. A very accurate an intelligent console comparison breakdown.

One thing i love to do is hit the streets and get opinions from people at the local video game stores in my neighborhood. Of course, my question was about KillZone 2. So far the workers at Game Stop who played the demo says it’s cool but not great. They said the movement is somewhat slow and takes some getting use to. They also said they are going to buy it but they felt, based on the demo, that is was not going to give Gears any competition (that was my question to them). They also said the game is very dark as far as the color palette. I also mentioned my bet with Shadowolf that KillZone 2 will not outsell Gears 2 and they said i should have betted you for a large amount of money!!! 🙂

  • LOL!! That’s the beauty of gaming, we are all entitled to our opinion.

  • Hello – just wanted to say that you are absolutely right!

  • Thanks for commenting 🙂
