In a recent Q&A with Forbes, Jack Tretton, SCEA chief officer made some rather bold statements regarding Playstations brand importance for the industry.
“In an industry that’s certainly had its challenges this year, we like to say that the environment where PlayStation wins is best for this industry.”
“We have a brand that can play on a worldwide basis, young and old, male and female, where our competition tends to be relegated to either select regions or to select consumer audiences.”
Sony believes their Playstation brand is walking a path that neither Microsoft or Nintendo can stand-up to. Of course there are many who would attempt to refute this position however, there may just be some truth to Mr. Trettons bold declaration.
While Microsoft has offered some amazing titles during this current generation of consoles, the mass majority of those titles while great have been for a more mature or hardcore audience. Also, of the currently available titles on the market, just how many of those titles offered on the Xbox 360 are 1st party titles seem to be very thin. On the other hand, Nintendo it appears has not only targeted a completely different demographic but currently offers the Wii that is light years behind the competition in terms of online functionality and graphical fidelity.
Nevertheless, an argument could be made for both Microsoft and Nintendo. Despite the lack of 1st party titles and regular system failures, Microsoft has still managed to maintain a significant marketshare lead over Sony during this console cycle. Of course Nintendo can continue smiling as they currently dominate this console cycle and are now trying to offer more matured rated titles and a great example of that would be DEAD SPACE: Extraction which is exclusively on Nintendo Wii.
Sony offering the best balance of gaming and sheer entertainment by way of the PS3 and now PSPGo! is probably a reality that only you can decide.
