After playing the single player demo and reading some of the latest reviews, it seems Guerrilla Games latest shooter may have been unfairly nit-picked to the point of ridiculousness by some of the more popular gaming networks.
From the gameplay of this demo it is truly hard to believe any respectable gaming journalist would actually undercut this experience with negative propaganda based on some self righteous quest to be different. These reviews might be going beyond the point of an opinion. They can appear to become over-exaggerated banter with no respect for the herculean development efforts put forth by Guerrilla Games.
From complaints that the cut-scenes go black causing too much delay between the action, the dialogue being considered flat and boring with no real need to listen, to being called a ‘miserable experience’, and not offering anything new to the genre which I must add is a complete double-standard, this demo begs to differ in a big way. In fact this demo which more than likely doesn’t scratch the surface of the full experience makes an embarrassing mess of the holes found in some the latest reviews.
Nevertheless, this is only a demo.

The fact that this kind of thing is even important in today’s gaming scene is sickening. They’re reviews, and mostly good ones (86 metascore, give me a break), yet somehow there is this campaign of propaganda designed so that these journalists can look different? Now game journalism as a whole is concerned with bashing the games they use as a means of supporting themselves so that it will stand out from the crowd? Grow up.
Reviews are opinions, nothing more. You can make a million excuses why game reviews are so much more important than every other consumer review on this planet, but they’re not. If you take issue with an opinion, then form your own and work with that. Implying malicious intent with a 7/10 review score (the lowest KZ3 has gotten thus far, and still far above average), makes you look like a pompous ass.
“To our gaming journalist brother and sisters who tirelessly and HONESTLY place the interest and concerns of gamers before their very own, I salute you.” So catering to an opinion that you feel would be most popular among your readers rather than giving an honest one bears saluting?
Catering to an opinion that is of the same like mind as your own just proves many things however, this is not about catering to ones readership, but more so about the honesty of reviews and the double standard that is paramount currently in our beloved video game industry. Questioning a review should never be considered sickening if the possibility that untruths have been found. Again, an opinion is completely respected but again there is nothing wrong with questioning that opinion.
RED – pathetic denial SONY hater.
i just want to say thank you so much its about time you came along, because to many cod comparisons and early scoring 7.5 out of 10 really but cod got 9 if not 10 out of 10. we need more people like you and from the gaming community i wanna say thanks. sincerely Chris Mejia, my real name by the way
Chris you’re very welcome

Its simple, sites like IGN rely on MS for ad revenue and they dont wanna upset them especially now there on xbox live and then there is the fact there are just pro 360 and have 360fanboys who review ps3 games.(no honest check the people names who review ps3 games on facebook and there 360fanboys.)
But the bottom line is sites are biased and are anti ps3 this gen especially americans ones all so they can see the xbox win(MS so happens to be an american company)
Its should be banned cause its messing with peoples wallets and giving the games industry and honest reviews a bad name.
Killzone 2 was trash and scored higher than 3 which after playing the demo and beta is clearly better.
you dont have a clue,kz2 was amazing with a epic story line n multi player, beter than anything on xbox anyway.
No kiddo, you don’t. KZ2 was shit, period.
I agree, it’s nice to see a gaming website not afraid to post the truth. There definitely is a double standard with reviews, especilaly if you consider how poor the story was in Halo Reach and yet it got no mention.
As extreme as it sounds I’d bet MS bribed the reviewers, that’s what they’re all about, the easy way.
tell me about it ,how can they score black ops higher than KZ3 is beyond me ,black ops which is unplayable to a lot of people
Many good points have been brought up. Black Ops is very disappointing for the PS3 and in some cases unplayable. How did it receive a higher rating than Killzone 3. Just on those facts alone… the reviews seem very fishy at best. I’m personally not a fan of FPS shooters but I still demand a fair representation of games. Everyone should.
I am not against drawing some analogies to other games within a review (as long as that is not the whole review). I take a stand against reviewers telling you X game is not Y game. For example: Killzone 3 is not COD: Black Ops. Immediately my response is “No Shit” but under that statement is bias, bias that doesn’t belong in a review. So when you see reviewers telling you what a game isn’t it’s immediately obvious they started the review with that template of thought in mind. Those reviewers have little integrity in my eyes.
As a reviewer you are supposed to see what is good about a game and what is bad. Not just make comparisons to current pop-culture trends in gaming. If reviews continue down that trend you won’t have many developers taking many chances and core gaming will become more myopic then it already is.
A further statement on reviews, the 10 point review scale is flawed. I prefer an integer based 1 to 5 scale. It’s much simpler and it doesn’t provide reviewers with much room for bias without being completely obvious. If everyone is giving a title 4/5 and 5/5 then the 2/5 and 3/5s will look more out of place. If those reviews are filled with negative comparisons (what the game ISN’T) then you know the reviewer just has an axe to grind.
Perhaps it’s time for reviewers to recuse themselves from the process if they don’t have the integrity to deliver a review that isn’t a soap box opinion piece for their favorite system or game.
the truth is :
- most of big websites are american
- most of big websites will give a 10 to Halo, even if they only played 10 minutes.
- most of big websites hate ps3 and love xbox, every multiplatform game will score better on xbox, even if it’s a 0.001 point, so “their” version is the best to play on
- most of these big american websites will pull trigger and bang bang every ps3 game, even if it’s a masterpieace. And triple bang bang bang if its a exclusive masterpiece: no ps3 game should score better than a xbox game.point.
- Gt5: a true masterpiece, with it’s flaws, but still a masterpiece: all those big websites played a couple of hours, with a couple of cars and tracks, and bang bang bang, once again, saying, for exemple, there is no damage, where there is damage, but after level 20. those guys played 2 or 3 hours, and “let’s kill Gt5 with low scores, so Forza remains the best”
- every product that isn’t “usa made”, isn’t good. if Killzone 3 was a xbox exclusive, all those websites would be giving 10′s to it. all the small problems would be forgiven, and the game would get a 10/10. Since it’s a Sony exclusive, Killzone 3 shouldn’t get better scores than halo. So let’s give it a 7/10, let’s invent some stuff, stupid stuff, so we can grab 2 or 3 points.
-Some of these big websites, they even dare saying they can’t test the 3D, because there is no 3D capable tv to play the game. WTF ?? Tomorrow, there’s a halo game that will support 3D, all these guys will run and buy a 3D ready TV, and they will give 12/10 to its graphics, because of 3d. In Killzone3, and other ps3 games, developpers STRIVE to give us the game with 3D, and those reviewers don’t give a fuck about it, poor guys, they don’t have a 3D ready TV. ohhh i’m gonna cry, poooooor little guys. c’mon…!
- Yeah, the ps3 is out for 4 years, and still so much hate. THAT HATE, from you, you and you, you big gaming websites, that PREFER xbox to PS3, and will always make the best games on ps3 look like they are a big shit. Thank you guys, journalists, whatsoever.
- for all these websites, since you want ps3 to fail, simply stop reviewing ps3 games, and review only xbox games, i don’t care if all of them get 10 out of 10, everytime. but please stop KILLING ps3 and ps3 games. stop reviewing them. we don’t need your “written in 5 minutes” ps3 reviews, where graphics get a 6/10 because of a bad texture, where the sound get a 7/10 because of the game offers 7.1 sound, and you play in stereo, where gameplay get a 7/10 because the guy can run, jump and shot, all that exists in other games, therefore, there is no innovation, where the game lasts only 8 hours, where you don’t like the fonts used on multiplayer for showing people names, and so on…..
DON’T REVIEW PS3 GAMES, WE DON’T NEED YOUR “WRITTEN IN 10 MINUTES, WHILE PLAYING HALO ONLINE” REVIEWS.
Well said sir couldn’t have outlined that better myself. I think some reviewers still have a bad taste in their mouths about the somewhat rocky launch of the PS3. In the initial year or so of the PS3′s life cycle it was notorious for having inferior ports of multi-platform games and annoying 20 minute installs. Those issues are a thing of the past but it’s pretty obvious from the points you’ve just outlined that a lot of reviewers still let them skew their impressions.

I own a PS3 & 360. My 360 is dead due to RROD, and my 60 GB PS3 still works to this day perfectly as i dust it out weekly with dust cans. Personally these American journalists always are pro 360. I own both no joke, and besides 360 is only good for FPS, and action games. They tried my favorite Genre “JRPG” only to have it backfire on them, and that is why PS3 is the true RPG system. I choose PS3 instead because of PSN, I’ve tried LIVE for a few months and was not that satisified as I found myself surrounded by nothing but FPS junkies who play nothing else & have no life. PS3 is the better console I enjoy PSN and am soon to get PS+ since they’re putting a cloud based server for backing up your PS1,PS2,and PS3 save files. People should really stop listening to these Bias A-holes.
I’m a JRPG gamer so too bad, I don’t like COD Black ops. F&*k that game I’ll play Killzone 3, Resistance 3, and Twisted Metal. 2011 is the set year where SONY’s PS3 dominates the gaming market completely outselling the 360 in total sales worldwide, not to mention there are over 20 PS3 Exclusive titles coming out “Only on PlayStation”. 2012 there will be many many more PS3 exclusives coming out from SCE, Square- Enix,Namco Bandai, Irem, Hudson, Konami, NIS, and more.
This year SONY will announce a price drop of the PS3 slim to $199, and a backwards compatability add-on free for PS+ users and $10 for everyone else.
In time next year the PS3 will get close to outselling the Wii worldwide, and then will dominate Nintendo in late 2012.
“From complaints that the cut-scenes go black causing too much delay between the action, the dialogue being considered flat and boring with no real need to listen”
i found it funny when reviewers nitpicked that. i just finished mass effect 2, great game but it have that ‘cut-scenes go black causing too much delay between the action’ problem way more and voice acting is one of the most boring i’ve heard, especially shepard. but mass effect 2 some how got 9.6, just curious who paid these reviewers to bring the score down… from just playing the beta and demo killzone 3 is already at least a 9.0
Journalists are there to generate readership and therefore cash for their employers, nothing more and nothing less.
Given the constant releases by Sony we will be seeing over the year of 2011 I would not be surprised if many Journalists have been ordered by their head honchos to intentionally cut back on Sony game scores as to not alienate their Xbox fan readership.
Crazy conspiracy, might just be, but consider that many gaming websites are owned by the same media tycoons and that the journalists constantly share information on gaming journalist forums.
This artical is exactly what I had in mind. PS3 games always gets put down and scores lower even if it had better graphics and with extra added levels or DLCs. For example the recent Dead Space 2, Mass Effect 2, Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 which scored lower on PS3 just because of the freaken reviewers who are xbox fans. All these games have better graphics and extra exclusive contents on the PS3 and yet they are rated below the xbox. It is a shame that the industry allows for this sort of bias to happen. Tell me how does I game like Black Ops or CODs score higher then Killzone 3? I have played Black Ops and all other COD games out there and I can say Killzone is a much better game, it has one of the best graphics, gameplay and physics out of any FPS out there. Each bullet you fire you can really feel it hitting your enemies which which you dont get in COD.
GT5 is a masterpiece in it’s own right. The game is unique in that it realistically simulates car racing and yet it gets criticised for been boring or dull. If GT5 was made to be anyway similar to Need for speed or the thundreds of racing games out there it would be criticise for copying others and not innovate and they would have giving low scores either way. GT5 has the best graphics out of any racing game, it runs at 1080p, tell me which game on the xbox can run at 1080p? Not many at all.
I’m having a blast with Killzone 3 Beta, the game is simply awesome and alot of fun. When played Combined with Playstation Move Gun controller and it adds a completely different expience not seen using the normal controller. It adds realism and depth to a game as though I’m holding a gun inside the game. 3D also adds another dimension to the game which I’m fortunate to own a 3DTV. With so many new innovations like Move, 3D and jetpacks I cannot see how some reviews can claim it does not innovate which is total BS. These reviewers ought to take a closer look at themselves before they damage the gaming industry.
The fact is reviews are not Just opinions its what the masses will accept as the games quality. Despite Major industry Reviewers claiming it doesn’t sell games, a review is the one thing everyone checks before buying a game, even you!. To give an exception game like kZ3 any thing less than 9.5 is a Lie. When One guys opinion effects millions of dollars in sells its no longer just one guys opinion. Reviewers and game developers understand this, its time you do too
I STOPPED READING IGN SINCE GOD OF WAR 3 AND IS VERY CLEARLY JUSTIFIED EVERYTIME A PS3 EXCLUSIVE COMES OUT. JUST LIKE WHEN I STOPPED LISTENING TO WHAT EDGE MAGAZINE SAYS SINCE KILLZONE 2 CAME OUT.
Great article, my thoughts exactly… after seeing KZ3 in action I have NO idea why anybody would ever want to play Call of Duty again. I certainly won’t.
“In fact this demo which more than likely doesn’t scratch the surface of the full experience…”
Ok, so the demo doesn’t scratch the surface of the full experience, but you’re still able to make judgements about others’ ratings of the full experience yourself? And then criticise reviewers for double standards? Cool story bro.

I have never ever seen so much negativity thrown at a console in my 20 years of gaming! So much media backlash on Sony CE after the runaway success of the PS2. So much politics that should have been left to politicians. This is very sad indeed.
It seems this media buy out has proven a force that had an adverse effect on Sony & PS3 but what is more surprising is the consumers counter strike against the media bias. PlayStation gamers has proven a much stronger power than all these so called journalists combined. PS3 by its real quality has proven its worth amidst all this negativity people throw against it.
Killzone 3 IMHO is up there with Uncharted 2 in terms of quality! So much fun to play & behold.
Bah!! There’s always gonna be COD and Galo bitches out there who think those two games are the only ones worthy of a decent review! FUCK those twats and FUCK anyone who reads reviews and bases their opinion on them! I STILL cannot believe people actually read those reviews then decide if they wanna buy the game or not. What a bunch of fucking sheep (the same kind of sheep in Seth MacFarlane’s ‘cavalade of comedy cartoon). If anyone has seen that, they’ll know what Im talking about!
Its amazing to me sometimes the reviews some games get over others, especially when a once Xbox exclusive comes to the PS3. Meanwhile, great games exclusive to PS3 have a harder time getting good reviews. First off, let me clarify that I love games, irregardless of system. I dont own a Xbox because I chose not to support a company that releases unfinished products on their consumers, i.e. Windows, Xbox360. I am knee deep in Mass Effect 2 largely bc everyone said that it is the greatest game ever. While I am enjoying the game, it is a severely flawed game. This is not a PS3 issue, its a gameplay issue. Now this game received 9s and 10s on the Xbox. The same game on the PS3 with DLC included receives lower scores on the PS3. Its absurd.
I am also playing Dead Space 2. It comes with Extraction (on the same disc!) for the same money as the Xbox version that doesnt include Extraction. Clearly the better option for any gamer with both systems is the PS3 yet I have seen some articles stating the Xbox version is better. WTF?!?!
REALLY?
For the record…Killzone 2 was insane. One of the best FPS I have ever played. I expect KZ3 to be nothing short of awesome.
Did they just call the Beta a Demo ? LMAO !!!
I’m with Red, every time a big game doesn’t get a score people expect it to get they get crazy and start spitting out conspiracy theories or start accusing reviewers of being fanboys.
Which is evidenced all over the place in these comments.
I agree; this is becoming stupid. I don’t think there’s any gamer, reviewer or otherwise that DOESN’T want a game to succeed and be awesome. I know it’s easy to THINK there’s some conspiracy or hidden agenda when a review doesn’t turn out the way we want it too, especially if it’s from a reviewer we usually admire. But seriously this is getting idiotic and really speaking volumes about the immaturity of gamers.
What’s even stranger is that I haven’t read one review of Killzone 3 that doesn’t recommend it as a purchase. Reviewers seem to be divided on the story-telling (yes, some reviewers actually LOVE the story!) and some people have issues with the loading (which would NOT be apparent in a demo which installs to a harddrive) but everyone seems to agree about the excellent gameplay and campaign-pacing and multiplayer. There ARE reviewers giving this game a perfect score and there’s some that are a bit more critical but overall Killzone 3 is holding up just as good if not better than COD Black Ops did when it got released.
Red, I love you. You are the only commenter on this who has made a shred of sense.
Everyone else has done nothing but make claims that the 360 is ahead because it’s American, or that they bribe people. It’s been said before but I’ll repeat it; reviews are SUBJECTIVE OPINIONS and are NOT SET IN STONE.
I played Killzone 1 and 2 and I didn’t enjoy either of them. That’s fine, I’d have given them an honest review and it wouldn’t be positive. That doesn’t mean that I’m telling you “Don’t buy Killzone because it’s crap” it means I’ve taken the time to thoughtfully write out my opinion on the game.
There are plenty of games I don’t like, that doesn’t mean I hate the system they are on. It’s the same with reviewers and MOST gamers (the rational ones).
One last thing, before you all moan about 360 fanboyism…read all of the comments above and note how they are all basically saying “FKYU TEH PS3 IS TEH BEST 360 SUX”.
Why do people always compare and then argue like children about which platform is better? I have both an Xbox and a PS3 and adore them both for different things.
Killzone is a completely different game to COD. I do like KIllzone more as it has more scope but there are millions of people throughout the world who enjoy, nay love COD. this may be because they’ve never played Killzone, (or anything like it), or because they grew up with the COD franchise. just enjoy games for what they are and quit all the PS3 Vs. Xbox whining.
If you feel a reviewer is being biased to a certain platform then exercise your right to complain to the company they work for. I’m sure this will be far more constructive than moaning about it on every blog you come across.
I just don’t get how they can call killzone unoriginal and generic then turn around and say that games like battlefield and call of duty ARE original.
