As one of the biggest and currently exclusive blockbusters offered on your favorite Xbox 360 console, the Gears of War series is a megaton shooter that many PS3 games would love to get their hands on. And this year the third installment to the series will be released giving the Xbox 360 faithful a reason to poke out their chest. But what if this series became multiplatform? Could this actually happen? Well, laying out the facts, Microsoft doesn’t own the Gears of War property, Epic Games does as their company president states;
“We definitely own Gears of War. This is our franchise, our IP,” so the possibility is still there.
The possibility Epic president Mike Capps is referring to is the idea of offering the Gears of War trilogy to the PS3 faithful.
“Do we wish we could take all those Killzone [players] and Resistance fans on PS3, and get them to say ‘Gears is awesome’? Yeah, sure I’d love to ship the Gears trilogy on PlayStation. That would be fun. I want to be there; I want to be everywhere.”
Before you Xbox 360ers aim your verbal rpg’s at Epic, you haven’t been betrayed just yet. Gears of War 3 is still an exclusive to the Xbox 360 and please note that the relationship between Epic and Microsoft is a very solid one;
“Time and time again, when it came down to figure out what we do next with Gears, we sat down with Microsoft and they’ve given us really good, compelling reasons to work with them again.”
Nevertheless, the idea of the Gears of War trilogy was brought up by Epic Games, which could certainly fit comfortably on a blu-ray disc. Would it be too far off to think the possibility of bringing this trilogy to the PS3 is inevitable, certainly not!
Understanding the importance of the bottomline ($$), the days of Gear of War exclusivity might just be drawing to a close.
