Special Forces: Team X Review

From the developers which brought us the addictive free-to-play shooter Blacklight: Retribution on PC comes, Special Forces: Team X, a stylized, team centric 3rd person shooter made available on Xbox Live Arcade and PC. Featuring a brutal online firefight multiplayer experience, SF:Team X gives players the option to play as an elite squad of Special Forces operatives across several team oriented maps. Supporting two, three, and four teams during matches forcing the idea of teamwork as going it alone offers a quick and brutal death when running into and two or more enemy operatives.

Jumping into SF: Team X players are introduced to a sort of cell-shaded cartoon art-style adding a cool expression to the games frequent death meter – whether you’re the one dishing out the punishment or getting you skull exploded from enemy fire. SF: Team X features multiple maps offering an intimate gunplay affair which encourages taking cover at all cost. At its core SF: Team X is simple yet a clear cut shooter offering no real unique or standout shooter elements however, there is no denying the game is definitely fun as dropping enemy players is quite satisfying.

Like most shooters, while waiting for a match to begin players can vote for their preferable map however, in SF: Team X players can select up to three map options for each designated map section ultimately making up the complete map for the next round of carnage. SF: Team X does offer character and weapon customizations but don’t expect to be overwhelmed by tons of options. Standard features like primary and secondary weapons mixed with frags and so on await your liking. While I did mention earlier that the game doesn’t offer anything unique to the shooter genre, the ability to literally release a guard dog on a nearby enemy does add a nice new touch to those engaging standoff’s. Sometimes this doesn’t work out as planned as your dog might get confused and decide to run out and stare at the wall instead of attacking, so be sure you’re in close proximity of your enemy when releasing your K9.

The key to being successful in SF: Team X is simple, stay near your teammates as much as possible and guard those unseen angles. Becoming too comfortable with going into cover does have its disadvantages as many cover options can be flanked from lateral map positions and or higher advantage points. You will also learn quickly that sometimes peeking your head out from cover or by revealing parts of your body, you can be dispatched as easily as not being in cover at all. This is where blind-firing comes into play.


Sprinting around the map offers a sort of Gears of War essence as the responsive controls swiftly aid in helping player find cover fast. In addition, Zombie Studios has added an up-close and personal melee approach to the warfare. The first time I caught an enemy player carelessly crouched while looking down his sniper scope I ran up close and tapped the melee causing the game to quickly take over briefly showcasing my avatar as he pulled out his sidearm just before he plugged one in the back of the enemies head, then slamming the enemy down to the ground adding two more kill shots just below the back of the neck, brutal but undeniably awesome. Other melee attacks are added to the affair as well.

SF: Team X also enables players to run around as a chainsaw wielding psychopath, dispatching enemies quickly. So, if you see someone expressing themselves with their trusty chainsaw, put them in your cross-hairs at a safe distance.

After ranking up into the high teens I’m still not done getting my kick off with SF: Teams X. For $14.99 taking the plunge into this satisfying online only 3rd person shooter is well worth it. Aside from the games terrible title, I’m sure you’re mature enough to overlook that for an affordable experience giving players a jolt of simple thrills. Special Forces: Team X as a series has the great potential of evolving into something very special.
