While both Both Sony and Nintendo allow indie devs to self-publish through PSN and eShop respectively, updates have come in that indie developers looking to self-publish on the new Xbox One will unfortunately still be unable to self-publish.
As IGN points our, currenrtly as it stands indie developers must establish a publishing deal with Microsoft Games Studios or a third-party publisher to get their games on XBLA. Following Sony’s PS4 reveal which showcased a strong commitment to independent developer community, assumptions were high assuming Microsoft would follow suit, yet we now know this is not the case.
Speaking with Shacknews, general manager of Redmond Game Studios and Platforms Matt Booty states, “We intend to continue to court developers in the ways that we have.”
“I would also expect that for this new generation, that we’re going to continue to explore new business models and new ways of surfacing content. But Microsoft Studios is a publisher that works with a wide range of partners, as do a lot of other people, to bring digital content to the box.”
