At the recent PlayStation Experience event in San Francisco, CA, Sony and KOEI TECMO announced that Nioh, a dark, samurai-centric action RPG, will be coming to the west exclusively for the PS4. Under the development direction of Kou Shibusawa, Hisashi Koinuma, and Team NINJA, our initial impression of Nioh took us back to the days of Onimusha, the popular hack-n-slash action narrative from Capcom. The gameplay style and movement of execution of Nioh seems to borrow influence from our time spent with Samanosuke Akechi, the prominent samurai fighter.
In Nioh, players will traverse war-torn Japan as William, a blonde-haired swordsman whose background as a fierce warrior and seasoned knowledge of the blade allows him to survive in the demon-plagued land of the samurai. Known as Yokai, these demons inhabit a number of dangerous locations and lie in wait in the shadows to ambush unsuspecting victims. Players will also face off with other samurai in supernatural sword battles and intense, multi-target engagements offering a level of difficulty that are expected to test the players samurai’s skills, patience, and strategy.
Said to offer a deep and original storyline that takes place during the Warring States Period of Japanese history alongside strategic sword-fighting action, the developers want to challenge players in a way that makes every mission and accomplishment feel earned and worthwhile. We’re really keeping our eyes on this one. As one commenter mentioned, Nioh is Onimusha meets Dark Souls, which sounds like a winning combination. We’ll be bringing you more information on this comprehensive, action-packed RPG experience as information comes our way in the coming months, in the meantime enjoy the new gameplay trailer.
