Sony has announced that their flagship PS4 has cumulatively sold through more than 40 million units worldwide as of May 22, 2016, making the popular system the fastest-selling console in PlayStation history. Yes, believe it or not this means that the PS4 is currently selling at a faster rate than the legendary PS2 at the same timeframe on the market. Whether Sony can actually do the unthinkable by ultimately selling more PS4’s worldwide than the PS2 is not something I want to bet on at the moment. However, in the meantime, the PS4 momentum is legendary in its own right. As of May 22, 2016 PS4 software sales also remain strong, with more than 270.9 million copies sold in retail stores globally and through digital downloads on the PlayStation Store.
Looking more at the PS4 software front, the highly-anticipated Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, which recently released on May 10, recorded remarkable global sales of over 2.7 million units in just one week. The PS4 software portfolio is only getting better from this point with games likes Nioh, Final Fantasy XV, Ryu ga Gotoku 6, Gran Turismo SPORT, Gravity Rush 2, The Last Guardian, Horizon Zero Dawn, RIGS, and more primed to make some serious noise once they are released.
With Sony Interactive Entertainment or (SIE) aggressively expanding the world of PS4, it seems like an impossible task at this point to knock PlayStation off the top of the console food chain this generation.
