Developer and publisher Firesprite has finally announced the long awaited launch date for ‘The Persistence’, the upcoming VR sci-fi horror thriller coming exclusively to PlayStation VR. The Persistence is going to be available as a physical release on Blu Ray as well as a digital download, releasing digitally on July 24th and in stores on July 25th.
In case you haven’t heard of the The Persistence, this game is set on board a deep space scientific vessel called The Persistence in the year 2521, the ship arrives at the site of a collapsing star 17,000 light years from earth. While conducting a major experiment, a horrific incident occurs mutating many of the crew. As The Persistence is pulled into the gravity of the collapsing star, the ship’s computer, ‘IRIS’ wakes remaining members of the crew from cryogenic sleep – one at a time.
The Persistence is a procedurally generated sci-fi horror VR experience where players take on the role of a clone of Zimri Eder, the security officer, and every time you die, you print a new (and potentially improved) clone of yourself. There’s a slim chance you could still escape, and take back your life, if only you can survive the horrors onboard and repair the ship’s devastated systems.
Throughout the quest you are confronted by terrifying mutants, one in particular is the Listener’s whose head is only partially formed and completely blind but super sensitive to noise and movement, and with a fully loaded Sentinel pistol he’s as deadly as they come. So standing still could mean saving your life when thy are around. However, standing still is something you absolutely can’t do when there is a Bloodhound on your tail. Bloodhounds never stops following you. Even if you run to the other side of the deck and hide in a dark corner he will keep following and eventually find you. There really is no escape. The only saving grace is that he ambles so slowly, but if he gets close, your only real option is to run.
The mysterious Fireball will test your nerve and your skill. Shimmering stealthily in the darkness, this hot character literally bursts into flames and runs screaming right for you, exploding in a ball of napalm. Running isn’t an option, but a well-timed shield might just save you. Yet, you are not a sitting duck, and you can fight back with an arsenal of upgradable gear and weapons. Weapons like the Ivy Serum when administered at close range, will convert even the most fearsome mutant in to your sworn guardian. With a goofy smile on their face, they will fight to the death to protect you.
Another option is to visit a Firearms Fabricator and make a Valkyrie, the hyper powered harpoon gun packs a massive punch. It might only have limited ammo but it has the power to lift mutants off their feet and pin them to walls. Or maybe you can get hold of a Grav Hook and lift mutants up in the air. With just the movement of your head you can swing them around the room, sending them crashing through objects and splattering them against the walls.
All the gear and weapons in the game are unlocked and upgraded at different places onboard the ship, like this Armory Fabricator. Which direction you choose is up to you, maybe you’ll invest in stealth, teleportation and silent killing skills, or maybe you prefer the heavy armor and big guns approach. It’s up to you to find your way to survive, so mark your calendars.
