Sony Brings External Storage Support To PS5 and More with New Console Update

written by Derrick Smith

It only took six months after the launch of the PlayStation 5 for Sony to offer users the option of an external hard drive or SSD, but here we are. With a new PS5 system update coming April 14, PlayStation 5 users will now be able to copy games off of your internal SSD to free up space for new downloads.

Now, like the Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 games on an external drive will not be playable until copied back onto the PS5s internal SSD. Additionally, new PS5 downloads will still require internal SSD space, since games still cannot be directly downloaded to the external drive, as was the case with your trusty PS4.

We are still awaiting the day when Sony announces the highly anticipated PS5 expansion option for the internal SSD storage, however, this latest update is certainly a step in the right direction. And frankly, with the PS5 having been on the market for more than half a year now, there are still anxious gamers holding out hope to land the hardware, so there are certainly bigger concerns than simply internal SSD storage.

The April 14 update also brings with it new changes to the PS5 UI. Now users will be able to share their gameplay sessions with friends on PS4, as well as allow remote play with the use of Share Play. Even still, PS5 users can also join multiplayer sessions directly from the PS5 dashboard, regardless of whether your friend is on PS5 or PS4.

Sony is also bringing the screen zoom feature to your PS5. A feature that is supported on PS4, this feature allows users to enhance their screen magnification. This could be a useful viewing tool for gaming with more accessibility.
