When a soft reboot of God of War was announced in 2016, fans were more than excited to finally see more Kratos and his exciting, albeit chaotic, adventures. When we learned that the 7th God of War game would introduce Kratos’ son, a majority of us started becoming skeptical. People just didn’t catch the appeal of seeing the epitome of masculinity babysitting a young boy. A lot of people feared God of War would become a rescue mission game and gameplay and look changes of the game didn’t make people feel better. These changes have disdained so many people that an army of them turned to Twitter to trend #NotMyGodOfWar.
When the game was released in April of 2018, however, any skepticism, doubt, worry, and any negative connotation were thrown right out of the window. God of War was everything we wanted and more. It was such a phenomenal game. It received multiple accolades, even receiving multiple Game of the Year awards. It’s debated to be the best Playstation exclusive of all time, if not one of the best video games of all time.
Sufficed to say, God of War was a critical success.
When Can We Expect a Sequel?
We have wanted the next installment of God of War the moment the previous game’s credits rolled. The game’s story was so incredibly compelling, we didn’t want it to end. It has been 2 years since God of War was released, so what’s next? Has a sequel been officially announced? Are the guys and gals at Santa Monica Studios currently working on it?
As of this writing, there hasn’t been any official announcement of God of War 2 yet. But considering how the previous game ended and how massive of a success it was, it’s fair to assume that a sequel is in the works.
There have been traces of smoke all over the internet that indicates Santa Monica Studios is indeed working on a new game. The award-winning studio has posted job listings all over the web, looking for experienced creatives who can work with them on a new title.
Is Santa Monica Studios gathering new talents to help them shape the world of the next God of War game? We don’t know yet, but we’re most certainly optimistic. If they are bringing new people in to work on the God of War sequel and development begins this year, if they haven’t yet already, we can most probably expect the game to come out late 2022 or late 2023. God of War started production in 2014 and went gold in 2018. It took them almost 5 years to create the game, which is understandable as they had to build everything from the ground up. Sequels frequently get made faster since the groundworks have already been built.
If our assumptions are true, we should expect Sony and Santa Monica Studios to announce God of War 2 later this year.
What The Sequel Could Do For Sony
God of War ended up being one of the best selling Playstation games of all time. It was the fastest-selling exclusive title at the time, selling over 3 million copies in just 3 days of its release. It also made the PS4 the fastest-selling console of the month it was released. All-in-all, it ended up selling over 10 million copies.
That’s a herculean number. From a business standpoint, it would make sense
for Sony to double down on God of War’s success by green lighting a sequel. God of War was received with critical acclaim. Both fans and critics loved every single thing about the game. If the game was able to do that well when they were doubters in the beginning, how much more successful is this game going to be now that everyone knows how capable and competent the creators of God of War are?
Sony has been vocal on optimizing their first-party titles exclusively on the PS5 moving forward. Once the God of War sequel gets released, it will, without a doubt, bring in massive sales for the PS5, just as God of War did for the PS4. The earlier they release the next God of War game, the earlier they’ll be able to bring people in to play the PS5.
What Can We Expect From The Sequel? (SPOILER WARNING)
If you’ve made it this far, then you’ve most likely played the previous God of War game. If not, then this is your spoiler-warning.
God of War left us with an abundance of mind-blowing revelations. The game was a mysterious thrill from start to finish. While they did manage to answer a lot of our questions, they also left a lot up in the air.
During a quintessential moment in the game, a certain someone blew the horn used to summon the world serpent, but it was never officially addressed who that was. The game’s secret ending finally gave us a glimpse of the god of thunder, Thor, himself, but the scene was revealed to only be a dream by Atreus, though this is most likely a premonition than a dream. Given the fact that Atreus is a half-Jotun, perhaps he too has inherited the giant’s ability to peak into the future.
Speaking of Atreus, we also now know that his Jotun name is, in fact, Loki. How the story can move forward with this development is exciting and interesting, to say the least. Norse mythology buffs will know that the World Serpent is one of Loki’s offspring. Perhaps this is why the serpent almost recognized Atreus when he met him.
However they move forward with God of War, we can safely say that the story and the game are in great hands. Judging by everything we know so far, God of War 2 could be announced sooner than we think. Until then, we can do nothing but speculate and, of course, be hopeful.
