PlayStation 5 Has a Bright Future of New Games and More
written by Derrick Smith
For the foreseeable future, Sony PlayStation seems well-positioned with what can be considered a rock-solid gaming front, supported by promising new games for 2021 and 2022, including the introduction of their next-generation PSVR for PlayStation 5 and more.
When it comes to games Sony PlayStation has approached this new generation of consoles with the same relentless pursuit of quality and quantity as with the PlayStation 4. Since the launch of the PlayStation 5, not only were their quality launch games in the form of Demon’s Souls Remake, GODFALL, Miles Morales: Spider-Man, Bugsnax, The Pathless, including Sackboy, A Big Adventure – we are now only months away from even more exciting new titles within the PlayStation pipeline, namely Returnal which was delayed until April 30th, with Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart announced for a June 11 launch.
Looking at other games in the PlayStation pipeline, Horizon Forbidden West is expected to launch in 2021, yet has not been given an official launch date for 2021. However, based on Sony Interactive Entertainment’s president and CEO Jim Ryan in an interview with GQ stated that he feels pretty good about Horizon Forbidden West, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, and Returnal launching in 2021.
“And, you know, there are two approaches to this: you can either hold the date and put out the game irrespective of quality or you can ship it when it’s right. We have always taken the latter approach. There have been some fairly high-profile instances of publishers trying the former approach. “It never works at the best of times. But I think in this world, where creative people are working remotely, you’ve just got to respect the fact that that development needs to take what it needs to take and to get the games right.”
While this statement could be a jab at CD Projekt RED and their most recent release of the broken Cyberpunk 2077 and of course we do know that Sony PlayStation took the game off their PlayStation Store, it seems Sony has no plans of releasing any of their first-party games until they are right for the end-user.
Case-in-point, Sony made official the delay of their celebrated racing simulator Gran Turismo 7, pushing the game back to 2022. We also remember that God of War Ragnarok was initially announced as a 2021 launch title. Could the next adventures of Kratos and his son be pushed back to 2022? Based on Sony PlayStation’s convictions of delivering quality over quantity, we would not be surprised with a 2022 delay of God of War Ragnarok.
On the PC front, Sony PlayStation is maintaining their generous approach of offering select first-party games to the PC audience. In the same interview with GQ, Sony Interactive Entertainment president and CEO Jim Ryan mentioned that more PlayStation games will be getting released on PC in the future, starting with Days Gone this Spring.
Running in parallel to their game offerings, Sony PlayStation made it official they are also releasing their next-generation PlayStation Virtual Reality headsets for PlayStation 5 in 2022.
Sony Interactive Entertainment senior vice president of platform planning and management Hideaki Nishino said – “Today, I’m pleased to share that our next-generation VR system will be coming to PlayStation 5, enabling the ultimate entertainment experience with more dramatic leaps in performance and interactivity,”. “Players will feel an even greater sense of presence and become even more immersed in their game worlds once they put on the new headset.
“We’re taking what we’ve learned since launching PSVR on PS4 to develop a next-gen VR system that enhances everything from resolution and field of view to tracking and input. It will connect to PS5 with a single cord to simplify setup and improve ease-of-use while enabling a high-fidelity visual experience.
“One of the innovations we’re excited about is our new VR controller, which will incorporate some of the key features found in the DualSense wireless controller, along with a focus on great ergonomics. That’s just one of the examples of future-proof technology we’re developing to match our vision for a whole new generation of VR games and experiences.
Overall, and as mentioned before, Sony PlayStation with its attractive future game offerings, launching this year, as well as next year, including the excitement surrounding the next iteration of PSVR for PlayStation 5 potentially launching in 2022 makes for an attractive future for PlayStation users.
